Stepping into Mission

Issue #45

Editorial

During my almost 20 years as a member of WEC I have heard many missionaries give their testimonies. It has been fascinating to hear of the different ways God calls people into mission. Quite a few of these testimonies have included phrases like: “From an early age I knew God wanted me to be a missionary” or “When I was a teenager, I heard a missionary speak and I sensed God calling me to mission work” or “I went on a short-term mission trip and God called me to long-term work.”

It is evident that God can plant seeds in the lives of young people which point them in the direction He wants their lives to take. In WEC we understand the importance of children and teenagers learning about missionary work and the needs of those who haven’t yet had the opportunity to hear the gospel. We understand too that often the journey into missions can be long and involve a series of steps, including being mentored and participating in short-term experiences.

In this edition of Imagine, we introduce you to an initiative that excites us - Stepping into Mission. Stepping into Mission, as the name implies, provides opportunities for all ages to explore missions using different steps. Whether it be programs for children or teenagers that can be run in churches, weekend camps, short-term trips, a year of cross-cultural training or a one year internship, First Steps, Next Steps, STOMP, Jump and Leap can get everyone actively involved. I hope you get as excited about the possibilities as we are.

Stepping into mission

The growth of the church around the world is fantastic. The facts that, according to the Joshua Project, there are 38,000 evangelical Christians in Mongolia, 879,000 in Benin, and 79,000 in Uzbekistan, is fantastic! It is also fantastic that the nations are coming to Australia. All round the country there are communities of Persians, Bhutanese, Sudanese and more, living here and having the opportunity to hear about Jesus.
