Technology and Media in Mission

Issue #46

Editorial

The sky’s the limit when it comes to using modern technology and media in mission; the potential is almost unlimited. As I’ve read the articles that have come in for this edition, I’ve been excited about the creative ways that people are being reached through technology and media. Film, radio and audio have been traditional non-print ways to do mass evangelism; now digital technology and the internet are enabling these media to be made available to even more people; and in their heart languages. As some of the stories illustrate, people are finding resources on the internet that point them to Jesus. Skype is being used to teach English. Apps and social media are other tools used to share the gospel.

Then there are those other ways mission agencies use technology. Websites and social media help us educate about missions and promote our opportunities and programs. Messaging and video conferencing apps enable us to communicate with our teams and workers wherever they are in the world. This enables us to provide better member care and respond quickly if there is a crisis.

Of course, as Ben says in his first article, it is not technology that brings people to Christ, it is the Holy Spirit. But the Holy Spirit is using technology and media to reach the unreached.

Going beyond: After each issue of Imagine is produced, we “go beyond” and add more articles and media on the theme to the WEC Australia website.

I encourage you to check it out under the theme heading at:https://wec.com.au/imagine

Same message, new methods

A few months ago I heard a young woman share her testimony of discovering Christ. In a predominantly Muslim nation, torn by war and violence and with no viable Christian witness, her heart was crying, “What is love?” So she did what so many in the world do today - she turned to Google for her answer… and she discovered Jesus.
